Hartwell Churchyard Safety

The churchyard committee recently carried out an inspection of the churchyard. Several monuments were found to be an immediate danger to users of the churchyard and were laid down. Others, that are not an immediate danger, will need attention before they deteriorate further.
Relevant families have been contacted, where possible, to inform them of any action taken and request that repairs are effected. Responsibility for memorial maintenance rests with the families of the deceased and not with the Parochial Church Council.

It is not our intention to cause unnecessary anxiety to families, but we have a legal duty of care for safety in the churchyard, and that of its users, under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Occupiers Liability Acts of 1957 and 1984. The churchyard committee ask that, in the interests of safety, any monuments that have been laid down remain that way until repairs are effected.

The trees in the churchyard were also inspected and some were noted to need attention. Any remedial work will be undertaken in due course.

Scaffolding
As you may have noticed, there has been scaffolding erected around the church during the month of March and April. This was to allow the replacement of the guttering at a cost of £7,500 plus VAT. The guttering was expensive as it had to be replaced in cast iron to comply with the Diocesan Advisory Committee rules, as our church is Grade 2* listed.

3rd December Christmas Fayre in the Community Centre, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
