Nether Heyford - Heyford Bowls Club

Heyford Bowls Club was founded in 1991 by a group of people who had attended an evening class for Short Mat Bowls at Campion School Bugbrooke, which was then quite a new aspect of the old game. The club meets in Nether Heyford Village Hall and started with just one evening a week but soon expanded to two evenings and one afternoon session as it proved very popular, being a game that can be played on equal standing by both women and men of all ages. Many fund raising events were held and soon we purchased our own equipment. The club was very happy to welcome other clubs for friendly matches, and soon they were entering many competitions They played all over the county and joined in many leagues. Several trophies were won and all had much pleasure.

At the outset it was agreed to try for a lottery grant to have an outdoor green on the playing field . After a lot of form filling we were successful with the lottery grant and with funding from South Northants District Council and Bowls Club fund raising in June 1996 work started. We were very honoured to have Tony Allcock M B E come and officially open our green in October 1996, although at this point the turf was very new. By May 1997 we were ready to start our first season, we had many friendly matches with clubs from surrounding villages who were happy to help us establish ourselves.
