The 1100s

We know little of Heyford in the 1100s, but during this period Northampton continued to become a centre of strategic importance. Under the Norman administration Simon de Senlis became Earl of Northampton. It was he who built Northampton Castle and the wall that surrounded the town. He built (or rebuilt) All Saints Church and the Church of Holy Sepulchre, and he endowed the Priory of St Andrew.

The work of building Northampton was continued by his son Simon de Senlis ll, and his grandson Simon de Senlis lll. Every King from Henry l (1100-1135) to Edward lll (1327-1377) visited and spent time at Northampton.

The people of Heyford must have been aware of these developments and some may have visited Northampton to take part in trade or to witness some of these historical events.
