And so we reached the year 2000. This marked the end of one millennium and the start of another. The Millennium was celebrated by our villagers in traditional Heyford style. There were no formal plans to celebrate together at midnight, but the Parish Council had issued an invitation for 'everyone in the village to congregate on the Green at 11.45, New Years Eve to celebrate the start of the year 2000. Bring all the family along, and friends, and don't forget the champagne. Let us welcome in the New Year as a united village in the special Heyford way.'
As midnight approached, people appeared from all directions, from the pubs, parties, and their homes. Many were armed with whistles, party poppers and champagne. Others were carrying the millennium candles provided to each household by the local churches. At midnight, a large firework was let off and the people sang Auld Lang Syne. There were between three and four hundred people around the Green, in high spirits and good humour.
So what will the new millennium bring? We'll have to wait and see. Will Heyford survive the next thousand years. I have a strong feeling that it certainly will.
