Do You Know of the Newitt Family

Our parish clerk has received a letter from someone trying to trace their family history.  Her mother's grandfather was Edward E Newitt son of Thomas Newitt, whom it seems was from Wappenham.  She has been told the Newitts lived in a large house in a village near Banbury.  Searches at Northampton Records Office have found land being left to a Thomas and Richard Newitt.  It seems we are looking at dates between 1758 - 1870.

She is curious to know any information any local historian my have to help in her research.  She would particularly like to identify the house and discover if it is still standing.

Do you have any information that could help her?  If so, please email us at Wappenham@tiscali.co.uk

Mobile Library - Times

As previously reported, there’s a mobile library calling at Wappenham, with a good selection of adult and children’s books.  It calls here between 14:55 and 15.10 at the Green, every fortnight. Current visit dates are: Mar 1st, 15th, and 29th; April 26th, and May 10th and 24th  2004.

New Transport Idea for the Over-16s

There’s a project in Daventry called ‘Wheels-4-You’ which covers a gap in village transport.  16-year-old school-leavers can’t drive and yet bus provision is dire.  So how do they get to work or college??

Daventry Area Rural Transport Partnership has created a scheme that loans out mopeds, and provides training and protective clothing, to these people.

What about safety you might ask??  Well, research into accidents shows that most accident-related motorbiking injuries occur on larger, faster machines.  And now the A43 bypass has been built, our road is quieter.

Do you think we should have a scheme like this?  Wheels-4-You’s coordinator is Paul Curtis, at ‘Connexions Northamptonshire’.  Maybe he should know of our needs… his telephone number is 01604 705831.

Information from ‘Village Viewpoint’ Winter 2003, sponsored by Northamptonshire ACRE and local councils.

A Much Feted Event

The snowdrops were beautiful, the daffodils majestic.  Another year with so much to look forward to and, of course, that includes the Village Fête.

This year, Saturday, 4th September is the big day!  I will enjoy co-ordinating the festivities but if you have any good ideas that could contribute to a successful day, or would just like to lend a helping hand, please let us know Wappenham@tiscali.co.uk

Thank You from Claire

Thank you to everyone for your kindness at Christmas.  Although I love my job, it can be tough when it’s cold, and the smiling faces of the people in the village keep me going and make the job really enjoyable.  So thanks very much – it makes it all worthwhile.
