Wappenham Questionnaire Results

Questionnaires were filled-in during the summer of 2003. Please note that this is a draft document. The open questions are not included in the following results, these will come at a later date.

Household

Out of the 120 households in Wappenham who received the questionnaire, 90% (108) responded. The area covered included Astwell Mill – the “back road” between Astwell Mill and Wild Hill (get the list from Hilary so we have a geographical idea of the area we covered).

Please note that the following data and percentages are calculated according to the 108 questionnaires we received, therefore where there are percentages you should bear in mind that that these were calculated by dividing the data by 108 (the number of households that replied to the questionnaire).

At the time that this survey took place, there were 256 individuals living in 108 households. For one household we don’t know how many more individuals live there other than the one who responded to the questionnaire, since the question was left unanswered. There were 197 adults and 59 children in 108 households (again this may be slightly more since for one household we do not have the exact data).

It is interesting to note that in the 1901 census of Wappenham, there were 383 inhabitants living in 103 households (16 households were uninhabited when the census took place). The population had dropped by approximately 33% since then (see table below).

Population Table

Although the number of households is pretty much the same, it is the size of these, which has reduced.

In 2003, time at which this survey took place, there were 77 (71%) households with no children under 18 living in them and with 2 or less adults, more specifically, 53 households consist of 2 adults and 24 households consist of one adult.

The biggest age groups are the 26 to 40 and the 41 to 55, followed by the 61 to 75 (see table below). We do not know to which age category 6 children and 10 adults belong.

Work Base Table

Twenty-three villagers answered that their main work base was at home, 108 answered that they do not work from home, the remaining did not answer the question.

Amongst those who work from home (this includes people that their home is their work base and those who work from home but where home is not their home base), 13 work full-time form their home base, 10 work 3 days or less and for a further 8 it is variable.

Twenty-four villagers answered that they run a business from Wappenham and 112 indicated that they didn’t. The remaining did not answer the question.

The following question was optional (8 answered) what type of business (es) they ran from Wappenham

Agriculture/Horticulture: 1, Construction: 4, Finance/Prof services: 3, Other service: 5

With regards to the questions 'What type(s) of housing development would your household like to see in Wappenham?' respondents could tick as many asnwers as they liked, all of the households (108) that filled in the questionnaire answered this question.

Overall 39.3% of households would not support any housing development in Wappenham paradoxically only 31% said that they would locate new housing ‘nowhere’ (in theory these figures should be the same). If we look at the data in more detail 12 households who have ticked the none category have also ticked another category: 9 ticked single dwellings, two further households have ticked less than 10 and a last household as actually ticked all of the answers even they ‘don’t know’ category! One of the assumptions is that for 11 of these households the residents could not agree on the question and decided to tick as well as ‘none’ another category.

Furthermore, seven households who only ticked the ‘none’ category did not tick ‘nowhere’ to the question where would your household locate new housing in Wappenham. They also ticked infill (4) and conversion of redundant buildings (6).

It seems that the village is divided on this question, especially if we consider that in a single household, individuals do not agree. Because of the high number of households who would not support housing development (38.9%) and that approximately half of the residents 52.3% would support a housing development consisting of single dwellings, further consultation with villagers regarding this question is advisable.

The villagers are also divided regarding affordable housing 43.5% answered they would support such a scheme and 49.1% answered that they wouldn’t the last 7.4% did not answer the question. Again all matters concerning housing requires further consultation.
