Traditional and Modern Upholstery

with Damian York

The Tutor

Damian YorkAfter 15 years as a professional upholsterer working for a bespoke company in Northamptonshire, Damian decided to share his wealth and depth of experience by becoming a tutor.

For 5 years, Damian taught to college students wishing to gain a qualification in upholstery; and also, to individuals working on specific projects who wanted to learn more generally about the craft, without working towards a diploma.

After a few years of working with both clienteles, Damian started his own business to work exclusively with individuals and small groups, outside the educational system.

The Classes

You may have an heirloom that needs re-upholstering or you are thinking about purchasing a second-hand piece of furniture that will need some work, whatever your choice, the lessons will give you the necessary skills and support to achieve a high quality bespoke upholstered piece of furniture.

You can work on any project you like - from re-upholstering a stool to a chaise longue. However, the larger the project, the longer it will take to finish. If this is your first time, you may want to start with a smaller project. As a rule, traditional upholstery takes much more time than modern upholstery. A professional can re-upholster a sofa using modern techniques in 1 week and using traditional techniques in can take up to 3 months.

Tuition is either on a one-to-one basis, or in groups. The groups are self-organised, and the minimum required is 3 students.

The classes are open to everyone and you do not need any prior experience.
